MODERATOR PEEP THE COMMENT JAY-Z MADE ABOUT WEARING RED:
MONTREAL – Jay-Z is in Montreal Friday for his first concert here in 10 years.
A month and change before his 40th birthday, and less than 24 hours after performing with Alicia Keys at Yankee Stadium for the second game of the World Series, the New York City rap star was casual and conversational while taking questions from reporters during an afternoon press conference.
First topic on the agenda was the fact that, with his new album The Blueprint 3, Jay-Z surpassed Elvis Presley by becoming the only solo artist to have 11 No. 1 albums according to Billboard.
“It’s been building toward that for a couple of years now,” he said of the accomplishment, wearing a Yankees cap and trademark shades. “As it’s been getting closer, it’s been getting surreal.
“In any genre – whether you’re talking about Elvis or the Beatles, those names are immortal. For a rapper, it’s unprecedented. Hip-hop artists don’t have long careers, so to be at the top like this, it’s never been done.”
An early moment of levity came when Mirror hip-hop writer Morgan Steiker told Jay-Z he was disappointed in the new album.
“I thank you for your honesty,” Jay-Z responded, “but that’s not my concern. I don’t like the red-on-red you’re wearing, but that’s just my taste.”
After the laughter subsided, he continued, on a more serious note.
“I’m trying to grow as an artist, every time. Some people are stuck on what I made in the past. I don’t like to do the same thing, I don’t like to wear the same clothes. I’m not like that. Like I say on the record, if you like my old stuff, buy my old album.”
Jay-Z famously retired from rap in 2003, only to return in 2006 with Kingdom Come, which received mixed reviews.
“Sometimes you fail (in your efforts),” he acknowledged. “It doesn’t have to be perfect. I think Kingdom Come set me up for The Blueprint 3. There’s no way I can make the same record I made in 1996.”
Asked what kind of record he set out to make this time around, he answered:
“I just wanted to make a forward (-thinking) record. I just wanted to have fun, and I think I achieved that. I wanted to move forward – forward music. I don’t know that it was anything more than that.”
But if he was relatively humble at times, he didn’t hesitate to sing his own praises when the opportunity arose. One question was about the role of ambition in his career.
“As an artist, I want to be king of the world,” said the rapper, who is commonly referred to as king of New York. “That’s my ambition; that’s really the honest truth. That’s why I’ve gone to the studio and worked since Day One. That’s always been the goal. The rest is up to people, but I see myself as the best. Do you?”
Again, there was laughter in the room.
Looking to the future, a MusiquePlus reporter asked about his next album, which Jay-Z has said will be more experimental and may even include collaborations with indie-rock acts such as Grizzly Bear (whose concerts he has been spotted at, with wife Beyoncé).
“What more can I say, except that it won’t be No. 1,” he said, with a smile. “People might say, ‘What the hell is this?’ Or it might be brilliant. I have no idea. It might be the biggest album in the world, or it might be something indie. Hopefully it will be something you will love.”
gay-z is starting to show more affection towards beyonce especially since beans is preparing to air out his dirt. He's trying to prove that he's not bi-sexual. She look so uncomfortable over her husband.
your are right the all are mechanical dummies that why their music sounds like robbots because they are the robbots. beyonce looks trashy and she copied madonas material girl video.
