Jay-Z

Forbes Magazine recently arranged for the rapper Jay-Z and investor Warren Buffet to meet and exchange insight into their worlds of business.

Here are two highlights from the scheduled Interview:

Warren Buffet

Don't get elated because something had gone up or depressed because it went down. If I knew the facts, and it went down, I bought more of it. He also taught me that famous lesson about a margin of safety, that you don't drive a truck that weighs 9,900 pounds across a bridge that says "Limit 10,000 pounds" because you can't be that sure. If you see something like that, go a little further down the road and find one that says, "Limit 20,000 pounds." That's one you drive across.

Jay-Z

And for me, it's that truth, finding the truth of the moment, of where I am at the time, not trying to cater to a certain demographic or being something I'm not, not driving the truck over a 10,000-pound bridge. There are so many similarities in what he was just saying. So for me, it's just having the discipline, and the confidence in who I am. If I go into a studio and find my truth of the moment, there are a number of people in the world who can relate to what I'm saying, and are going to buy into what I'm doing. Not because it's the new thing of the moment, but because it's genuine emotion. It's how I feel. This is how I articulate the world.

  1. JZ: I grew up in the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn. Our classrooms were flooded. It was very difficult for teachers to give you one-on-one attention. And there was this one sixth-grade teacher named Miss Lowden. She must have seen something in me, and she gave me this attention and this love for words. It's funny how it works, just a little bit of attention. She also took us on a field trip to her house, which opened me up to the world.

WB:I guess if you could pick one word it would be "teacher." Jay has talked about his sixth-grade teacher. I think almost anyone that's been successful has had a teacher, somebody that's affected them.

  2. SF: You've said businesses need to build moats around them. What kind of moats should Jay-Z be building?

WB: Well, he's building moats all the time. Obviously. That's why he's succeeding even though he's moved beyond the age that you normally associate his field with. The best moat you can have is your own talent. They can't take it away from you; inflation and taxes can't take it from you. I urge students when I talk to them to look at the people you admire and list what makes you admire them. Those are things that you should do. Just write them down.

    Definition of MOAT
1: a deep and wide trench around the rampart of a fortified place (as a castle) that is usually filled with water
2: a channel resembling a moat (as about a seamount or for confinement of animals in a zoo)

  3. Don't think Gay-Z knew the definition of a moat.

  4. phi·lan·thro·py noun \-pē\
    plural phi·lan·thro·pies
    Definition of PHILANTHROPY
1: goodwill to fellowmen; especially : active effort to promote human welfare
2a : a philanthropic act or gift b : an organization distributing or supported by philanthropic funds

Funny, So Funny, Gay-Z Mentions teaming with Puffy to donate to the Katrina fund. Their combined contributions didn't equate to 1 million dollars -- not even $500,000 thousand.

In other words, the reason why he's sitting on over 60 million is because he's afraid to lose his wealth and to give it to a better cause -- so he sits on his wealth with hopes of becoming a billionaire.

Warren can't do business with Jay-Z. Read in-between his lines.

  7. Jay-Z's home to home tour HA! He's using his celebrity friends to assist with turning Roc Nation and Live Nation into a profitable company.

Build off the hype. Convince your friends to come home, to join Roc Nation and eventually live nation. The monopoly, the control.

Would've enjoyed a eminem vs. warren buffet interview.

  8. Buffett is known for choosing businesses that have an economic moat -- a unique competitive advantage that is difficult to mimic and that acts as a barrier to competition. Apparently, the same concept applies to having a successful career as well.
"The best moat you can have is your talent. Inflation can't take it from you. Taxes can't take it from you," said Buffett, advising young people to develop the habits of success. "Build moats around yourselves."

  9. "A guy by the name of Jaz, who I started out with real early, got the opportunity to go to London and record his album," Jay-Z said of the Marcy Projects native's album, Word To The Jaz. Jay-Z noted that prior to that opportunity, he was "involved in street things," the Brooklyn native said, "I went along with him, and we stayed for two months. During that two months there was a sting operation, and they took my friend away for 13 years. The only reason I wasn't there is because I was away doing this business stuff."

  11. A little Warren Buffett 101 for the rapper Jay-Z.

    Oh yeah:

Wit is (jay-z's) moat; it keeps the world at an esthetic distance and creates an island of privacy in the storm of attention.

    Oh yeah:

The birthday gift he purchased wife beyonce is a moat.

  14. The high walls and deep moats of costs and service

Economic terrain that is forever shifting violently is ground on which it is difficult to build a fortress-like business franchise. Such a franchise is usually the key to high business returns.

Widen the moat: build enduring competitive advantage, delight your customers, and relentlessly fight costs.

  29. I think what you wrote made a ton of sense. But, what about this?
what if you added a little information? I ain't suggesting your content is not solid., but suppose you added a title that makes people want more? I mean "Jay-Z" is kinda boring. You ought to look at Yahoo's
home page and watch how they write news headlines to grab viewers
to click. You might add a video or a pic or two to get people interested about what you've written. Just my opinion, it could make your website a little bit more interesting.
