  1. 3. Maxwell BLACKsummers'night (Seventies soul)- Maxwell pulled a Sade and just like her, he returned to the spotlight after many years off without missing a beat. For young artists trying to stay current, that can seem impossible. For a classic talent like Maxwell, it's easy. Music like this concept album about a romance is simply timeless. It's the first in a proposed trilogy and I for one am chomping at the bit. Akin to Stevie Wonder in his heyday, and is there any higher compliment than that?

  2. Maxwell continues to ride the R&B/Hip Hop Songs tally with "Pretty Wings".

Released last summer, "Pretty Wings" earned its 41st week on the chart Thursday. A major feat for the singer, whose single "Bad Habits" is also holding on strong, "Pretty Wings" comes in at no. 21 this week.

Both "Pretty Wings" and "Bad Habits" are taken from Maxwell's latest album "Blacksummers'night".

In related news, Maxwell is due to release a follow up to "Blacksummers'night" later this year.

  3. Best R&B Album:
    Maxwell - 'BLACKsummers'Night' (Columbia)

    Best Male R&B Vocal Performance:
Maxwell "Pretty Wings" - from 'BLACKsummers'Night' (Columbia)

Maxwell was everywhere in 2009. His December television appearances alone included performances on The Jay Leno Show, The Today Show and The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live, of which the LA Time's Ann Powers wrote "Maxwell's performance of Michael Jackson's 'The Lady in My Life' ... not only stood out, it made a quiet case for itself as one of the best televised musical performances of the year." Maxwell also made appearances this year on the Late Show with David Letterman, CBS Early Show, Good Morning America, CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The singer and songwriter's great year encompassed the biggest sales week of his career with a #1 debut for BLACKsummers'night after its July 7 release, at 319, 000 copies one of the top ten debuts of the year, while he made Billboard news as the first artist in the history of the Urban AC chart to hold the #1 (Bad Habits) and #2 spots (Pretty Wings) at the same time.

  4. Best performances

    2. Maxwell, “Pretty Wings.” Music is better off when this brilliant neo-soul star is in the spotlight. Maxwell, who stayed out of sight for most of the 2000s, needed no gimmicks, no aerial tricks, no garish costumes to put on a pitch-perfect performance of the standout song from his 2009 album. Of course, he was eventually joined on stage by deer-in-headlights Roberta Flack, and the magic dissipated.

  5. Is soul coming back?

I feel like soul never left! Definitely the attention is back on it with Maxwell's comeback and now Sade coming out. It re-confirms that if you make something with substance, you can come back out and have a following.

  6. Although almost every rapper has expressed interest in wanting to work with her, singer Sade recently talked about not working with artists like Kanye West and Drake, saying she tries to stay away from doing guest features. Sade says she does not like to work outside of her "safety" zone. "I don't think they have contacted me," she explained in a recent interview. "I've never collaborated because I've always avoided working outside my safety zone -- I can be exactly who I am and can fail or success within the moment. I feel safe working like I do. I wouldn't want to work in a situation where I am expected to deliver because I think I wouldn't deliver."

  8. American rapper Nas has put out a new track about his estranged wife, Kelis. In the track, Strong Will Continue, he speaks on how she was unfaithful during their marriage.

Kelis filed for divorce from the legendary rap star last year, only months before giving birth to their son, Knight.

It's been a very bitter divorce, with Kelis suing for more money than initially proposed - with the result that Nas has been ordered to pay out a hefty $51,000 in child and spousal support per month.

The new song features the lyrics, “Twisted and mangled, sort of like Bruce Lee life, cursed with his son Brandon. If that's you and me Knight, I pray our fates greater. How in the hell am I supposed to stay comfy, when I pay child support, alimony monthly...”

Strong Will Survive comes off Nas’s new eagerly awaited new album Distant Relatives, which features Damien and Stephen Marley.

  9. He also appears to cop to the rumors that he was unfaithful to Kelis while they were married: “So, I’ve stuck with some married women so fine, cheating while their husband rushing on the 40-yard line, wonder if this is what my ex did the whole time.”
