The Truth About: The House of Dereon Clothing Line

"I'm Tina and Beyonce's eyes and ears to all the designers,....If Beyonce saw a cool shirt and is inspired by it, I'll do a quick sketch and make sure the right designer injects it into the line as soon as possible." Quoting: Scott Nylund

Prior to his assignment with Tina Knowles, Nylund had worked with large-scale retailers and other designers. He was a designer for Tommy juniors and Andy Hilfiger; Tommy's brother. Tommy's brother held a responsibility in running Jennifer Lopez's company JLo.

In addition, Scott Nylund held a responsibility in illustrating the clothing garments for JLo. When his tenure came to an end at JLo, representatives from the Knowles camp, wanted to meet with him.

To date, Nylund is the design director of Beyond Productions, where he assists in the coordination of all three lines — House of Deréon, Deréon and Miss Tina by Tina Knowles.

Q How did you start working with Beyond Productions (co-owned by Tina and Beyoncé Knowles)?

A I got a call to come in and meet with them. I was so excited about meeting Tina Knowles that I prepared a project. We hit it off right away. They offered me an assistant design position before anyone else was hired. Because I've been able to work with them the most [over the past five years], they've become comfortable with my aesthetic. Now I'm the design director. It's wonderful. As Tina would say, I'm her eyes and her ears.

Q What does a design director do?

A [Tina] will start us with a color palette such as red, gray, white and black and we'll fill in the rest. Or she'll come back from London inspired by the English countryside and lion's head door knockers. So we'll go find fabric, inspiration illustrations. Being a director is like being a choir director: You make sure the cellos and violins are playing the same note at the same time -- coordinated and cohesive.

Q Were you involved with Destiny's Child at all?

A I was part of the Destiny Fulfilled tour. It was one of the most amazing times. They were just starting to talk about [Knowles' label] House of Dereon's part in that. We went from song to song. My notebooks from that experience will be on display in the exhibit.

Q Craziest thing you did for that?

A The day before the tour started in Japan, we switched the color of her pants. I had to spend 24 hours gluing all these crystals on. When I saw them onstage, I had a crying moment, because this is exactly what I should be doing right now. I'm so blessed. I have many moments when I have to pinch myself.

Q What's the goal with the exhibit?

A I want kids to see the evolution. There will be illustrations, five or six dresses Beyoncé wore, dresses from my Luther College show and one or two wedding dresses that I've done. It's a testament to education.

Scott Nylund's Fashions will be on display at the Owatonna (Owatonna, MN) Arts Center this Saturday.

  1. before beyonce hit a red carpet event. this dude always display a sketch of what she will be wearing as his main picture on sites such as facebook etc.

he designed her wedding gown. i am almost positive that it will be on display in Owatonna.

i keep telling you all that everything about beyonce is fake.

they are seriously trying to market her as the next best thing to happen in the music industry.

they are working on kelly clarkson because she wouldn't write songs for beyonce now they are preparing to shut her career down.

  2. MOD CHECK THIS OUT - NOT ONCE DID THEY MENTION THIS GUY. THEY ARE KEEPING HIM BEHIND THE SCENES. THE DRESSES HE DESIGNED FOR HER ARE DISPLAYED ON THIS WEBSITE!

As long as Beyoncé is still Beyoncé the words "I don't have anything to wear" will never touch her lips. Her superstardom has made her a fashion catcher's mitt, high-end designers throw so many clothes at her. But, her mother and creator of their clothing lines Deréon and House of Deréon, Tina Knowles, remembers a time when the only thing designers threw her way was a snub.

"I'll never forget when Beyoncé did her first red carpet for MTV," says Knowles, who will make a guest appearance at the Encore Esplanade's Fierce Fashion event Saturday. "I went into Versace and they said, 'No, we can't lend you anything, but you can buy one for $12,000.' "

My how times have changed. Today, if they know what's good for them, a designer is as likely to turn Beyoncé down as an ass-man.

After she donned Balmain's drummer boy jacket, it swiftly sold out on net-a-porter.com. Fashion magazines consistently show readers how to capture her look. And her recent collaboration with Thierry Mugler for the "I am" tour -- coming to Encore today through Sunday as the "I Am ... Yours" performances -- has left quite the fashion footprint.

Knowles tried for years to convert her daughter to the Mugler fan club, but Beyoncé couldn't see the light. Until she witnessed the legendary designer's works up close and personal at a MET exhibit. Shortly after, Mugler dressed his new fan for her "I Am ... Sasha Fierce" album shoot and eventually found himself creating a grandiose petticoat and other spectacular tour wardrobe changes.

For the Encore performances, which will be far more intimate than her other shows thus far, Knowles says to expect a pared down look. The focus will be on the songs, not the costumes. Translation: Hope for a leotard, but don't expect one.

Beyoncé's become as known for what she doesn't wear as what she does wear. The "Crazy in Love" video got that ball rolling and "Single Ladies" gave it a drop kick. It's all in the name of celebrating her curves, which Knowles also strives for with the Deréon and House of Deréon lines (House of Deréon is available for a limited time at Encore's Ensemble and Wynn's Mojitos) for which Beyoncé serves as a muse.

The most important advice Knowles' mother, the namesake for both lines, gave her was that "if a garment fits well, you've won half the battle." She passed that philosophy down to her daughters and makes it top priority when designing anything from a red carpet gown to her line's denim, which, from the way she describes it, could give an Olsen sister some booty.

"Regardless if you're a 2 or a 22, you still want that butt nice and high," Knowles says.

Dereon is 3 years old, but Knowles' work saw the spotlight long before that. During the early days of Destiny's Child, when it was still a quartet, their record company allowed a $1,500 fashion allowance that was supposed to cover the entire group. Rather than send the girls on the red carpet clad in Forever 21, Knowles got creative. She took the $1,500 to luxury fabric stores and went to work behind her sewing machine. No one was the wiser, not even the record company.

If she finds herself in a bind now, she doesn't need to sweat over a Singer.

"We laugh about it now," says Knowles. "But, when she needed it, no one would give us anything."

  3. lol

I use to watch the Kimore Lee fashion show and that dude (young black guy) was responsible for designing her garments.

Beyonce has a white gay guy designing her garments. Tina Knowles is a fib teller. She didn't design garments from this clothing line.

She want the credit for doing something.

Dude is a graduate from F.I.T and he still can't create a solid fashion line with original ideas.

He got caught and fight for stealing other people ideas. Now he's working with Beyonce and doing the same shit.

I understand why Beyonce is always compared to Jlo when it comes to fashion. She has the same guy designing her shit.

    illustrating.

    lol

They have these ugly dressed in a case. Beyonce is mad because Aretha Hat is in a case on Capital Hill in Washington D.C. and here's is where...?

This clothing line will sink ship just like the Jlo clothing line.

  7. WOWOWOW! I JUST READ A ARTICLE WHERE TINA KNOWLES ADMITS THAT SHE "SKETCHES" DESIGNS FOR THEIR CLOTHING LINE!

    READ THIS:

Knowles has been working with her now-famous daughter, designing costumes, for over a decade.

“I was her stylist for many years and designed a lot of the stage costumes,” she said.

She has since hired a full-time stylist for her daughter (she “discovered” him while he was working at Bebe in her hometown of Houston) and has had to hire him an assistant, as well.

While she remains focused on her daughter’s onstage attire, she oversees two fashion-forward side projects, as well: She runs the high-end, dress-filled fashion house that she named after her mother, House of Dereon, and another, more affordable line of clothing designed to appeal to her daughter’s fans.

While House of Dereon is sold at high-end retailers like Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales (and the shops at Wynn Las Vegas), Knowles said “the other (collection) is a young, contemporary line (that is) more affordable for the fans.”

“It’s more funky, fan-based clothes,” she said.

Despite a hectic life full of touring, recording, acting, modeling, and putting in appearances, Beyoncé is “very involved” in her mother’s work.

“Beyonce is very involved in the shoes and the handbags … She’s constantly giving input,” Knowles said, explaining how she and her daughter get to travel the world and pick up on trends before they hit the U.S. market.

Still, there’s only so much Beyoncé can do in addition to her other commitments, and her mother knows her role, too.

“Does she sketch things and design them? No,” Knowles stated plainly. “That’s me.”

Perhaps taking the lead from her mother, Beyoncé is a veritable fashionable force to be reckoned with – so much so that Forbes magazine recently named her the fourth most influential celebrity on the planet. Only Angelina Jolie, Oprah Winfrey and Madonna are more powerful – and in that order.

Still, her mother is the one that dresses her – for the most part, at least.
